Keeping Preschoolers Healthy and Strong This Winter

As the cooler months settle over Wollongong, many families begin to brace for the sniffles, sneezes, and occasional sick days that often come with winter. At Russell Vale Preschool, the wellbeing of our little learners is always our top priority. That’s why we’re sharing some simple, practical ways you can help keep your preschooler happy, healthy, and thriving this winter season.
Boost Their Immune System with Nourishing Foods

A strong immune system starts with good nutrition. Aim to serve your child a rainbow of fruits and vegetables each day—especially those rich in vitamin C (like oranges, strawberries, and capsicums) and zinc (like legumes, whole grains, and dairy). Warm meals like veggie-packed soups, stews, and porridge are perfect for chilly mornings and cosy evenings.
Tip: Involve your preschooler in preparing simple meals. Not only is it fun, but it also encourages them to try new healthy foods!
Keep Those Little Hands Clean

Preschoolers love to explore with their hands—which is great for learning, but not so great for germs. Teaching proper handwashing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of illness. At preschool, we practice handwashing regularly, especially after playing outside, using the toilet, and before eating.
Try This: Sing a short song like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" while washing hands to make sure they scrub for at least 20 seconds.
Stay Active (Even When It's Cold!)
It might be tempting to hibernate during winter, but keeping kids active helps strengthen their immune system, improves mood, and promotes better sleep. Bundle up and go for a walk, play a game of hide-and-seek indoors, or dance to their favourite songs in the lounge room.
🌦️ Rainy Day Idea: Build an indoor obstacle course using cushions, chairs, and tunnels to burn off some of that preschooler energy!
Prioritise Rest and Sleep

Rest is essential for growing bodies and strong immunity. Most preschool-aged children need between 10–13 hours of sleep per night. A consistent bedtime routine with quiet time, stories, and cuddles helps children wind down and sleep better.
Bedtime Routine Tip: Dim the lights and limit screen time an hour before bed to help your child’s body prepare for sleep.
Dress for the Weather

In our coastal climate, temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. Dress your preschooler in layers they can add or remove easily, and don’t forget warm socks, a jacket, and a beanie when heading outdoors.
At Preschool: We encourage children to play outside even during cooler weather, so please send them in warm, comfy clothes suited for adventure!
Keep Up to Date with Vaccinations

Make sure your child’s immunisations are up to date—especially the annual flu shot. It’s a safe and effective way to protect against the most common strains of influenza circulating in winter.
Check With Your GP: Many local clinics in the Illawarra region offer free flu vaccinations for young children.
At Russell Vale Preschool, we work in partnership with families to support every child’s health and wellbeing. If your child is feeling unwell, it’s best to keep them home to rest and recover—and to help stop germs from spreading to others. If you’re ever unsure, our friendly educators are here to help.
Let’s work together to make this winter a happy, healthy one for our little explorers!
